This is great when wearing running shoes, but not so good when you take them off. Most of you are used to striking on your heel but now you have to strike with your mid foot or fore foot. This can produce all sorts of complications because if you strike the ground with your heel barefoot it will send a very painful jolt up your leg and back. It can potentially produce more serious injuries. This is why it is important to pay attention to your barefoot running form.
So how do you change to a barefoot runner? Minimalist shoes or transition shoes are the answer. These are shoes that provide a barefoot sense but provide some cushioning to assist you to adjust.
So in conclusion barefoot running is technique that can aid people who are injury prone. Is barefoot running right for you? This is a question that only you can answer. However, if you seem to always be injured regardless of your running shoes then it might be something to look into. The easiest way to start is to simply take off your shoes and run 100 or so meters barefoot. Take it slow and really focus on your form. If you don't get injured and feel comfortable doing it extend the distance next time. Keep this up and start to incorporate new surfaces into your runs. Eventually you will be able to run long distances without shoes. There are a lot of people who actually run ultra marathons without shoes or with minimalist style shoes. Many people swear by being barefoot. Try it and see if you do.
